Role Overview

The Senior AI Researcher takes ownership of a dedicated research workstream within the AI Research team at Phrase. The role centres on building, training, and evaluating proprietary translation models and agentic workflows that serve live production traffic. The professional in this position collaborates with Product, Engineering, and Solutions teams to turn research findings into functional capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Design, train, and evaluate LLMs for translation and language-quality tasks using fine-tuning methods like LoRA and DPO.
Implement evaluation frameworks combining automatic metrics, LLM-as-judge approaches, and hybrid pipelines.
Build and evaluate agentic workflows for natural language processing problems involving multi-step reasoning and tool use.
Own a complete model-development programme from data and training to evaluation and production integration.
Benchmark frontier models against internal baselines and evolve quality-evaluation systems.
Mentor junior researchers, review pull requests, and contribute to hiring and technical interviews.

Requirements

Strong hands-on experience fine-tuning LLMs or large transformer-based models.
Solid natural language processing background with expertise in machine translation, machine translation evaluation, information extraction, text generation, search optimization, or reinforcement learning.
Ability to design, build, and evaluate agentic systems including tool-calling agents and multi-agent pipelines.
Experience designing and running evaluation frameworks with automatic metrics and human-in-the-loop evaluation design.
Strong Python skills along with experience using machine learning and natural language processing libraries such as Hugging Face or PyTorch.
PhD in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or a related field, or an MSc with equivalent hands-on research or industry experience.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with pre-training and preference-tuning methods like RLHF and DPO.
Industry experience with production natural language processing systems and live traffic monitoring.
Familiarity with the localization and machine translation domain, including MQM, COMET, and post-editing workflows.
Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Flyte, Prefect, or Airflow.
Experience with experiment tracking tools and cloud machine learning infrastructure.
Experience with structured agentic pipeline frameworks like PydanticAI or LangGraph.
Strong publication record or open-source contributions.
