About this role
Developers who enjoy operating with high autonomy and shaping internal technology through hands-on backend engineering will thrive in this environment. The team builds internal AI tools and systems to support refurbed's ongoing transformation into an AI-native marketplace operating across Europe.
This person will own the services, integrations, and deployment pathways that take internal tools from initial prototypes to secure, reliable full-scale deployments. The role exists to bridge the gap between emerging AI capabilities and practical company-wide execution, partnering closely with leadership and platform engineering to ensure internal tools perform reliably and transparently.
What you will do
- Design, build, and operate reliable backend services, APIs, and integrations that power internal AI tools and workflows.
- Manage a secure, supported deployment path that enables non-engineers to launch internal tools with built-in guardrails.
- Build and maintain shared AI capabilities, including reusable skills, plugins, MCP connectors, and a central registry of internal tools, ownership, and costs.
- Evaluate technical options and make pragmatic decisions about architecture, model selection, integrations, and whether to build or buy.
- Help define a risk-based review framework for internally built AI applications and assess solutions against it.
- Drive adoption of the tools you build through demonstrations, documentation, and hands-on integration support.
What you need
- Demonstrated experience as a senior backend engineer with a strong track record of building and operating production systems in Go, Python, or a similar language.
- Comfort owning services end to end, spanning architecture, deployment, secrets management, monitoring, and ongoing reliability.
- Hands-on background building AI- or LLM-powered applications for production use, including model integration, evaluation, and observability.
- Familiarity with modern AI development tools and hands-on experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor.
- Understanding of agent workflows, agent orchestration, reusable skills, plugins, and MCP integrations.
- A security-conscious approach by default, considering identity, access control, secrets, and data exposure from the outset.
- Valid right to work and based in Europe, including the UK.
