About this role

This role suits an experienced engineer who wants to manage the compute software stack for edge hardware in industrial automation. The Senior AI Compute Engineer position is based at the San Jose headquarters of Trener Robotics.

Role Overview

Trener Robotics seeks a Senior AI Compute Engineer for its San Jose location to handle the deployment and execution of complex models on physical edge hardware. The person in this position takes charge of the compute software stack that allows robots to run heavy artificial intelligence workloads and real-time control algorithms at the edge.

Key Responsibilities

Create multi-service software systems that execute Physical AI processes across heterogeneous architectures including CPU, GPU, NPU, and FPGA.
Develop, optimize, and test software pipelines to deploy neural networks, large language models, vision transformers, VLMs, and VLAs onto edge devices.
Deploy and accelerate deterministic robotics algorithms to satisfy strict real-time execution constraints alongside machine learning tasks.
Establish code quality standards and design test strategies for complete features to guarantee functionality on the physical floor.
Coordinate cross-functional handoffs across roles like firmware, software, and deployment.
Plan projects by dividing large initiatives into independently shippable increments and identifying schedule risks.
Challenge technically infeasible requirements and conduct scoped spikes to resolve difficult problems.

Requirements

Demonstrated background working with advanced algorithms for autonomous systems or robotics.
Demonstrated background deploying complex algorithms onto embedded and edge hardware beyond standard laptops and desktop PCs.
Comprehension of hardware execution models such as memory hierarchies and compute pipelines to extract maximum performance and anticipate bottlenecks.
Experience accelerating workloads utilizing CPUs, GPUs like CUDA, TensorRT, or ROCm, or FPGAs.
Familiarity with Altera Quartus and AMD Vitis.
Proficiency in creating production-grade, highly optimized C++ and Python code.

Nice to Have

Knowledge of robot kinematics for forward and inverse operations, numerical optimization, and constraint-based programming.
Understanding of modern artificial intelligence models and their hardware specifications.
Background in electronics engineering to connect software with edge hardware.
