About this role
Professionals who enjoy blending remote-sensing expertise with software engineering to scale quality assessment will thrive in this position. Planet operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, capturing empirical data used by commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors worldwide.
The Image Quality Support team sits at the intersection of imaging operations, satellite operations, software engineering, and business needs. The incoming engineer will divide time between manual visual quality assurance and writing the software required to scale these checks. Guidance from senior teammates will help develop both skill sets while maintaining high standards for the satellite fleet.
This role exists to assess and automate imagery quality across the fleet and investigate customer-reported quality disputes. A successful candidate brings a foundational understanding of optical remote sensing combined with solid Python capabilities to build internal tools and data pipelines.
What you will do
- Assess satellite imagery both manually and via automated tooling against contractual and technical quality standards.
- Build and maintain internal tools supporting quality assessment, ranging from QGIS-based tooling to backend scripts and data pipelines.
- Support investigations into customer-reported quality disputes by gathering technical evidence for team decisions.
- Contribute to automated quality-assessment systems to shift routine checks from manual review into automation.
- Write clear reports and tickets that other engineering teams can readily act upon.
What you need
- At least two years of relevant professional experience.
- A bachelor’s degree in geoinformatics, geomatics, remote sensing, or a closely related field.
- A working understanding of optical remote sensing fundamentals.
- Solid Python skills, including comfort with version control, code review, and writing more than one-off scripts.
- Exposure to QGIS or Python geospatial libraries such as GDAL, rasterio, and shapely.
- Basic familiarity with SQL and databases.
- Clear written communication skills capable of explaining technical findings to non-specialists.
Nice to have
- Linux comfort
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab CI
