About this role

Research Engineer, Robotics Evals is a full-time position located in San Francisco, Singapore, or remotely with timezone overlap, suited for professionals with a background in robotics or embodied AI research. The employee will develop datasets and evaluation frameworks for physical AI systems at HUD.

Role Overview

The Research Engineer for the Robotics team at HUD focuses on creating the datasets and evaluations needed to make robotics data useful for training and assessing embodied AI systems. This position involves translating research needs into data specifications, building validation methods, and running experiments to determine how data structures influence model performance.

Key Responsibilities

Research the data needs of robot learning and physical AI systems to convert them into concrete dataset and evaluation specifications.
Establish data schemas, ground truth, annotations, and quality standards across various robotics data types.
Create review and collection protocols for external data providers to execute reliably.
Build validation workflows and tools to audit datasets, identify quality issues, and provide actionable feedback.
Execute experiments and analyze model behavior to understand the impact of data quality, structure, and coverage on performance.
Collaborate with internal research and engineering groups, as well as data buyers and vendors, to enhance robotics data offerings.

Requirements

Experience in robotics, embodied AI, robot learning, or related multimodal research.
Proficiency in Python with experience creating data analysis, processing, or evaluation tools.
Demonstrated ability to turn research questions into dataset specifications, measurable quality criteria, and experiments.
Solid understanding of what makes robotics data useful or misleading for training and evaluation.
Attention to detail with the capability to identify subtle errors, failure modes, and coverage gaps in complex data.
Experience constructing research pipelines or tools without a prescribed roadmap.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with robot trajectories, demonstrations, video, sensor data, simulation, or other multimodal robotics datasets.
Background in reinforcement learning, imitation learning, or vision-language-action models.
Experience working in unstructured problem spaces and taking ownership from early research to production.
Early-stage startup background and communication skills suited for cross-functional and cross-timezone teamwork.
