Role Overview

AfterQuery is seeking a People Programs Lead for a full-time, on-site role in San Francisco to establish foundational talent infrastructure as the company scales. This inaugural HR and internal operations position reports to the Head of Business Operations & People and is tailored for an analytical professional who wants to build modern compensation, leveling, and retention frameworks from the ground up.

Key Responsibilities

Architect the overall total compensation strategy, including pay bands, leveling frameworks, equity structures, and annual market refresh cadences.
Establish written career pathways and clear leveling rubrics that outline operational expectations for progression.
Implement a streamlined performance management cycle focused on calibration without introducing heavy bureaucracy.
Develop comprehensive learning and development initiatives, covering onboarding, manager training, and feedback culture.
Monitor retention metrics, build sensing systems, and execute targeted programs to maintain employee engagement.
Collaborate with finance and leadership teams on headcount planning, organizational design, and compensation budget tradeoffs.
Treat internal talent initiatives like products by measuring user adoption, tracking outcomes, and iterating based on data.
Oversee and manage the organization's 1099 contractor program.

Requirements

Possess 5 to 8+ years of professional background combining top-tier strategy consulting, strategy and operations, and foundational HR or People program development.
Experience working at organizations recognized for robust talent systems or industry peers such as ScaleAI or Netflix.
Demonstrated track record of building and launching at least one major talent program completely from scratch.
Exceptional quantitative skills capable of modeling leveling decisions, equity refreshes, attrition risks, and compensation band overlaps.
Ability to think from first principles, debate effectively with company founders, and support recommendations using data and company values.
Comfort working in a fast-paced, 5-day in-office environment located in San Francisco that values direct feedback and a written-first culture.

Nice to Have

Previous experience handling organizational design during an artificial intelligence pivot or major business model transformation.
Background designing compensation models that incorporate both full-time personnel and diverse contractor workforces.
