Role Overview

Empirical is hiring a Lead AI Engineer for a remote position based in LATAM. The role involves building and owning a development pipeline where business users initiate tasks, AI agents handle implementation, and engineers review the outcomes. Rather than focusing on writing code or prompts, the engineer will manage the infrastructure, safety gates, autonomy tiers, and measurements that govern automated code generation.

Key Responsibilities

Own the knowledge plane by establishing project conventions, reusable agent procedures, source indexing, and rigorous enforcement mechanisms.
Build verification gates that inspect actual artifacts and test coverage rather than relying on agent self-reporting.
Design least-privilege authority and identity models, ensuring agent credentials combine participant permissions and maintain clear attribution for every commit.
Calibrate autonomy tiers using classifiers to route changes safely based on risk and incident history.
Engineer system containment measures, including circuit breakers, workflow ceilings, progressive exposure, and rollback mechanisms.
Manage request intake, deduplication, routing, gate logging, and evaluation harnesses to track configuration improvements.
Run systematic improvement rituals by reviewing dated incident records and continuously evaluating or removing rules based on cost versus utility.

Requirements

Located in Latin America with sufficient timezone overlap for daily collaboration with a U.S.-based engineering team.
At least 10 years of software engineering experience, including deep CI/CD and platform background.
Strong core engineering skills with the ability to review and govern code produced by AI systems.
Solid security instincts covering least privilege, credential scope, blast radius management, and untrusted inputs.
Advanced testing judgment with a focus on metric-driven reliability rather than superficial test success.
Practical, hands-on experience using coding agents on real-world projects.
Ability to operate cross-functionally with SRE, security, legal, and support teams.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
