About this role

AfterQuery is hiring a full-time Machine Learning Engineer, Data Privacy & Anonymization in San Francisco to build critical infrastructure that handles sensitive customer data safely. This position suits an experienced engineer with a strong background in natural language processing and production-scale data pipelines.

Role Overview

As a Machine Learning Engineer specializing in Data Privacy and Anonymization, the incoming professional will construct the foundational systems that allow AfterQuery to process confidential customer information securely. The role centers on designing anonymization layers and inline production software infrastructure that spots identifying details in incoming data and safely alters it while keeping the underlying data useful. The selected individual directly supports the company goal of curating trainable data from real-world corpuses for top-tier artificial intelligence labs.

Key Responsibilities

Construct detection models targeting PII, PHI, and quasi-identifiers spanning structured payloads, logs, free text, and code.
Manage the transformation layer, selecting appropriate methods per entity and policy such as masking, tokenization, redaction, pseudonymization, and format-preserving encryption.
Deliver runtime adaptors covering latency budgets, streaming inference, schema drift, and fail-open versus fail-closed semantics.
Create evaluation infrastructure incorporating recall-weighted metrics and conducting re-identification attacks on internal output.
Configure anonymization policy as a dynamic surface to handle varying customer and jurisdictional needs.
Oversee high-impact systems spanning the entire lifecycle from initial design to production deployment.

Requirements

Possess three to six years of relevant professional experience.
Demonstrate a robust software engineering background with a history of shipping production systems.
Bring practical experience constructing production-scale data pipelines capable of handling massive data volumes.
Apply natural language processing expertise involving information extraction, sequence labeling, or named entity recognition on messy text, or show trust and safety or fraud detection work focusing on rare event recall.
Familiarity with low-latency inference services such as event systems, sidecars, or streaming pipelines.
Capability to operate swiftly within a high-ownership and rapid environment.
Maintain a deep dedication to precision, high quality, and customer impact.

Nice to Have

Prior work in health-tech or fintech privacy, HIPAA Safe Harbor or Expert Determination, GDPR pseudonymization, differential privacy, tokenization vaults, k-anonymity, or synthetic data.
