Role Overview

Black Canyon Consulting is looking for a Junior Data Scientist to support research data analysis, dissemination, and scientific programming. The position focuses on conditions of high national priority such as infectious diseases and critical illness. The professional in this role will design and manage data pipelines, infrastructure, and workflows to support analytical and artificial intelligence systems.

Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, maintain, and optimize data pipelines, APIs, and data transformation workflows
Manage supporting infrastructure, databases, data lakes, data warehouses, and feature stores
Ensure efficient ingestion, transformation, access, and usage of information by analytical and artificial intelligence systems
Develop and maintain ETL and ELT processes, feature engineering workflows, and service layers
Expose data or model endpoints to downstream systems and applications

Requirements

Expertise in R or Python for data manipulation and statistical analysis
Experience using natural language processing techniques including text classification, named entity recognition, or information extraction
Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, large language model prompt engineering, and fine-tuning to extract structured information from unstructured data
Working knowledge of standard machine learning methods relevant to health data
Ability to critically evaluate artificial intelligence and machine learning methods for validity, appropriateness, and bias in a clinical research context
Strong written and oral communication skills to translate technical findings for clinical and non-clinical collaborators
Ability to collaborate with physician and clinical subject matter experts
Detail-oriented approach with strong data quality assurance habits
Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management abilities
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Working knowledge of structured query language and relational database management systems

Nice to Have

Experience with common natural language processing and machine learning libraries
Familiarity with clinical natural language processing tools or frameworks
Experience with embedding-based retrieval or vector databases for text and document search
Data visualization experience
Version control and documentation experience
Familiarity with electronic health record data and administrative claims
Prior experience in biomedical, clinical, or academic research settings
Understanding of regulatory requirements and data privacy relevant to health data
