Role Overview

Osmo is seeking a Head of Applied AI to lead machine learning engineers and research scientists, set model roadmaps, and oversee the transition of models from research notebooks to production APIs. Reporting directly to the CTO, this position requires working closely with chemistry, software platform, and sensory science teams at the company headquarters in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on a hybrid schedule requiring three days per week in the office.

Key Responsibilities

Lead, hire, and grow machine learning engineers and research scientists across formulation, prediction, and generative models.
Set the model roadmap for brief-to-formula generation, reformulation, cost optimization, and odor prediction.
Run the Olfactory Intelligence benchmark suite, internal quality gates, and customer model cards.
Deliver enterprise commitments by meeting contractual model accuracy gates and quarterly deadlines.
Partner with sensory science and fragrance development to design experiments and data annotation protocols.
Collaborate with software platform and product engineering to ship models to a reliable production API.
Remain hands-on by reading code diffs, challenging evaluation designs, and running experiments directly.

Requirements

10 or more years of industry machine learning or AI experience in an applied or research capacity.
Proven management experience hiring, leveling, and growing machine learning engineers or research scientists.
Deep expertise in at least one area: generative models over structured objects, molecular or chemical machine learning, multi-modal representation learning, LLM systems and evaluation, or Bayesian and experimental design.
Rigorous approach to evaluation, baselines, test set leakage, and metric tracking.
Experience owning models in production, including versioning, monitoring, and handling drift.
Ability to work on a hybrid schedule with three days per week in the Elizabeth, New Jersey office.

Nice to Have

Background in science fields such as chemistry, chemoinformatics, sensory science, or biology.
Experience delivering models for enterprise or contract-research partners.
Experience standing up machine learning platforms or evaluation infrastructure from scratch.
