Founding Engineering Lead at Clera in New York, suitable for senior engineers with strong applied AI experience. The role combines hands-on development with leading a small engineering pod.

Key Responsibilities

Build and manage a team of three to four engineers, handling growth, performance, and hiring while delivering core features.
Define platform architecture and make build-versus-buy decisions that affect product and revenue.
Establish engineering standards for AI-assisted development, including review criteria, definition of done, release cadence, and on-call practices.
Lead technical design and initial implementation of new initiatives.
Assess applied machine-learning research and select techniques for production use.
Collaborate with technical leadership on product roadmap, model strategy, and overall ML approach.
Spend the majority of time building initially, then shift focus toward team leadership.

Requirements

5 to 8 years of engineering experience (4 to 5 years for exceptional candidates).
Proven experience training and deploying machine-learning models in production, beyond simple LLM API integration.
Full ownership of technical architecture, infrastructure choices, and build-versus-buy trade-offs.
History of setting engineering standards and managing engineers while continuing to code.
Strong judgment in applied ML, covering classical methods, transformers, and agent-based applications.
Recent track record of shipping production software, handling ambiguous or inherited code, and using AI coding agents effectively.
