About this role

OpenHands is currently hiring a remote Forward Deployed Engineer to own technical success and drive customer deployments of the open-source AI platform. This full-time position suits experienced software professionals with a background in customer-facing technical roles and backend systems.

Role Overview

The Forward Deployed Engineer works directly with customers to deploy OpenHands, build integrations, and shape how AI-assisted development functions in production environments. This role acts as a bridge between customers and the internal product team, turning real-world usage patterns into actionable product improvements that help development teams move faster.

Key Responsibilities

Own the technical success of accounts from the initial proof-of-concept stage through full production deployment, which includes the hands-on installation of OpenHands Enterprise on customer-managed infrastructure.
Build custom integrations to unblock adoption, such as agent-identity and OAuth delegation, connections to Atlassian and GitHub, and MCP-based connectors.
Develop agentic use cases alongside customers, covering areas like code review, CVE remediation, Issue-to-PR, and SDLC automation, alongside packaging skills as plugins.
Run adoption enablement initiatives including onboarding sessions, demos, office hours, and on-site workshops.
Debug issues across networking, containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and various services to quickly unblock customers.
Surface product gaps and patterns from the field to engineering and product teams while producing reusable playbooks, documentation, and demos.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of professional experience working as a software engineer or in a deeply customer-embedded technical capacity.
Strong proficiency in a backend or systems language, with Python being preferred, along with comfort building operational tooling and debugging production environments.
Practical experience deploying and operating containerized workloads in self-hosted or customer environments, specifically using Kubernetes and Helm alongside related networking, secrets management, and certificates.
Experience working directly with clients in production or high-stakes settings, demonstrating the judgment to navigate ambiguity and explain complex technical tradeoffs.
Familiarity with modern developer tools, Git-based collaboration, and CI/CD pipelines.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with identity and access patterns including SSO, OIDC, OAuth, agent or LLM tooling, MCP, or OEM platform integrations.
Background in developer relations, pre-sales, or field engineering.
Familiarity with AI developer tools like Cursor, Claude Code, OpenHands, or Copilot.
