About this role

Waymo is focused on developing the Waymo Driver, an autonomous driving technology that powers its ride-hail service and is applicable across various vehicle platforms. The Hardware Engineering group is responsible for designing, building, and perfecting the physical components that serve as the sensory and operational elements of this autonomous technology, integrating them into vehicle platforms. This role exists to define and execute the global strategy for systems integration, diagnostics, vehicle commissioning, and field engineering across multiple platforms. The Director of Systems Integration, Diagnostics will lead and scale a multidisciplinary engineering organization to ensure the successful bring-up and deployment of new Waymo Driver hardware.

This position requires an individual who can manage complex system integration projects from initial prototype stages through to commercial fleet readiness. Responsibilities include owning the end-to-end integration of hardware and software components, developing diagnostic infrastructure, and establishing scalable vehicle commissioning processes globally. The ideal candidate is a technically deep leader capable of driving cross-functional collaboration with software, manufacturing, and OEM partners to resolve complex system issues.

Success in this role depends on a blend of deep technical expertise across electrical, mechanical, and software domains, coupled with proven experience in leading and mentoring engineering teams. A candidate who excels at bridging the gap between hardware design and operational deployment, while managing external relationships, would be well-suited for this leadership challenge.

What you will do

  • Define and execute Waymo’s global strategy for systems integration, diagnostics, vehicle commissioning, and field engineering across various vehicle platforms.
  • Lead, scale, and mentor a multidisciplinary engineering organization covering Systems Integration, Diagnostics, Scaled Commissioning, and Field Engineering.
  • Own the complete systems integration and bring-up process for new Waymo Driver hardware and OEM vehicle platforms, spanning compute, sensor pipelines, and vehicle networks.
  • Drive the architecture and development of next-generation diagnostics infrastructure, automated tooling, and telemetry necessary for high-volume manufacturing and fleet operations.
  • Establish, mature, and scale vehicle commissioning procedures, including end-of-line testing, provisioning, and calibration at manufacturing facilities and service centers worldwide.
  • Collaborate with Hardware, Software, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations, and OEM partners to define integration requirements and triage complex system-level issues.

What you need

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • The candidate must possess over ten years of experience in systems engineering, integration, or diagnostics for complex hardware/software systems, such as those in automotive, robotics, or aerospace.
  • Demonstrated experience in people management, including a proven track record of leading and growing multidisciplinary engineering teams is essential.
  • Proven experience leading full-system hardware/software bring-up, HIL testbed architecture, and base-vehicle interface integration across multiple concurrent programs is necessary.
  • Deep technical breadth across electrical, mechanical, and software domains, including experience in HW/SW co-design and system-level debugging, is required.
  • Experience scaling products from early-stage prototyping to high-volume manufacturing or commercial fleet operations is required.
  • Strong partner management skills, specifically experience navigating and influencing external partners or OEM organizations, are required.

Nice to have

  • Direct experience in the Autonomous Vehicle (AV) space.
  • Experience with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
  • Experience with cloud-connected software-defined vehicles.
  • Experience with diagnostics and data-driven reliability engineering.
  • Experience managing global teams and vendor relationships for hardware integration and manufacturing.

Benefits

  • Discretionary annual bonus program
  • Equity incentive plan
  • Generous Company benefits program
