Role Overview

Abacus Insights seeks a Senior Forward-Deployed AI Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity in the United States. This individual contributor role focuses on designing and building AI, generative AI, and agentic systems on Snowflake, while spending significant time working directly within client environments. The position starts with configuring the Snowflake semantic layer and delivering client metrics and reporting, later expanding into agentic AI solutions. Acting as the senior technical voice on engagements, the engineer guides technical strategy and implementation without managing people or engagement ownership.

Key Responsibilities

Design, configure, and maintain the Snowflake semantic layer, including Cortex Analyst semantic views, and model business logic for client requirements.
Build and deliver client metrics and reporting derived from the configured semantic layer using SQL and Python.
Collaborate with client stakeholders to define metrics requirements, validate outputs, and resolve discrepancies.
Design and implement retrieval-augmented generation systems, agentic workflows, and MCP-based tooling connected to the semantic layer.
Build and maintain evaluation harnesses to monitor AI and agent performance, making decisions on model selection, prompting strategies, and system design.
Serve as the primary senior technical voice on client engagements to scope use cases, translate business requirements, and configure solutions in client environments.
Partner internally with product, data science, and operations teams to transition AI and machine learning projects from prototypes to production.

Requirements

Minimum of 8 years of software or AI engineering experience, incorporating hands-on design of AI and machine learning systems.
Deep and practical experience with Snowflake, covering Snowpark, Snowflake Cortex, and Snowflake ML.
Demonstrated background building and maintaining semantic layers on Snowflake to support AI and agent consumption.
Track record of delivering metrics and reporting off a semantic layer for clients and validating outputs against business logic.
Proven experience designing generative AI and agentic systems such as retrieval-augmented generation, agent orchestration, and evaluation harnesses.
Prior professional experience working directly with external clients in an implementation or forward-deployed capacity.
Strong Python programming skills, including API design and the delivery of production-grade AI and machine learning pipelines.
Excellent communication skills for explaining technical tradeoffs to non-technical audiences.

Nice to Have

Hands-on experience with Databricks, including Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, and MLflow.
Familiarity with healthcare payer or provider claims data.
Experience with classical machine learning and model fine-tuning.
Relevant professional certifications such as SnowPro.
