ProductGenius is seeking a Backend Engineer to build and maintain core systems for a real-time learning AI shopper feed for Shopify. Role Overview

This hands-on engineering position involves designing and maintaining the APIs and data pipelines that connect live user and merchant behavior to self-learning systems. Engineers enjoy a high level of autonomy to shape the core architecture, working closely with AI researchers and software engineers. The role requires adhering to agentic-led development, leveraging daily AI coding tools, and managing multiple parallel coding sessions to navigate a fast-moving codebase.

Key Responsibilities

Build and maintain the real-time learning engine at the heart of the business.

Develop and support APIs and data pipelines linking live user behavior to self-learning systems.

Champion engineering practices that safely accelerate the team, including AI-assisted coding, streamlined CI/CD, and robust QA.

Take full production ownership by analyzing logs and traces, identifying root causes, and enhancing testing to prevent recurring issues.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in building and maintaining production backend systems.

Hands-on daily experience utilizing agentic AI coding tools and managing multiple parallel sessions.

Demonstrated background in building APIs and data pipelines that connect live systems to downstream analytics or machine learning platforms.

Ability to work across multiple languages, with regular use of Python, SQL, TypeScript, and React.

Capacity to dive into a complex, unfamiliar codebase and achieve rapid productivity.

Strong mathematical or analytical background, supported by a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have

Natural curiosity for new technology, such as experimenting with newly released tools or running an LLM locally for fun.

Exposure to containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and GCP.

Experience working with ClickHouse queries and database optimization.

Familiarity with fast-paced startup environments where priorities and scope frequently shift.

E-commerce industry knowledge or a strong understanding of merchant and customer workflows.

Experience collaborating cross-functional teams, such as sales and marketing, alongside customer integrations.
