About this role
Developing production algorithmic systems from problem framing through launch and iteration forms the core of daily responsibilities in the Applied Science team at Garner Health. Team members build models that determine how members select doctors and when to engage them, working with proprietary clinical metrics and large-scale healthcare datasets. The role exists to scale the company's healthcare redesign efforts through applied machine learning, optimization, and heuristics, functioning similarly to a quantitative researcher in a hedge fund environment. Candidates who thrive here possess strong applied problem-solving skills, a bias toward action, and a desire to solve complex real-world challenges.
What you will do
- Ship production algorithmic systems end-to-end, covering everything from problem framing to launch and ongoing iteration.
- Translate messy healthcare and business constraints into clear objectives, tradeoffs, and decision frameworks.
- Define the metrics needed to judge whether a solution is working and validate solutions before deployment.
- Select the appropriate methodology for each problem, utilizing machine learning, optimization, heuristics, or simple rules.
- Experiment with novel approaches beyond the obvious to achieve better results and produce rigorous work.
- Review peer code and analyses while building a deep understanding of the healthcare economy.
- Build provider tiering optimization algorithms and member engagement models using claims data and in-app behavior.
What you need
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related STEM field with an expected graduation in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.
- Demonstrate a bias toward action by quickly translating ideas into working prototypes.
- Possess strong applied problem-solving skills to define metrics and deliver solutions that improve them.
- Maintain a solid command of required modeling methods and the data dependent on those models.
- Exhibit strong judgment in choosing between statistical models, heuristics, optimization approaches, and simpler algorithmic methods.
- Communicate clearly with the ability to present work to senior stakeholders.
Benefits
- Flexible PTO
- Medical/Dental/Vision plan options
- 401(k) with company match
- Flexible spending accounts
- Teladoc Health
Skills and tech stack
Questions candidates ask
What is the target base compensation for this role?
The target base compensation range for this role is $150,000. Individual compensation depends on qualifications, skills, and applicable laws, and the position is also eligible for equity incentives.
What technologies and tools will I use?
The tech stack includes Python, SQL, AWS, Snowflake, pandas, XGBoost, PyTorch, HuggingFace, and modern LLM tooling and eval frameworks. Tools are chosen based on the problem rather than the resume.
What projects are on the near-term roadmap?
Near-term roadmap projects include building a provider tiering algorithm that optimizes geographic access and total-cost-of-care savings, as well as a member engagement model that uses claims data and in-app behavior to choose touchpoint channels.
Is employment visa sponsorship available?
Garner Health is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.
