2027 Summer Intern, MS/PhD, Software/ML Engineer, Simulation
About this role
Engineers and researchers who feel curious about Level 4 autonomous driving and want to work on complex simulation technology will thrive in this environment. The software engineering group builds the core intelligence for fully autonomous vehicles, enabling the Waymo Driver to perceive surroundings, make split-second decisions, and navigate safely across public roads. Team members tackle intricate technical problems in robotics, perception, and deep learning alongside hardware and systems specialists.
During this summer internship, participants partner with industry leaders to design multimodal data pipelines, prototype Vision-Language Model workflows, and build ground-truth evaluation datasets. The internship program functions as a vital component of the company culture and recruiting pipeline, offering hands-on mentorship alongside practical project experience. Qualified candidates typically pursue advanced degrees and bring strong programming foundations to support large-scale simulation testing and machine learning initiatives.
What you will do
- Design and build multimodal data pipelines using Python or C++ that combine vehicle sensor data and 3D map data for machine learning models.
- Prototype and iterate on Vision-Language Model workflows to automatically detect and categorize complex real-world driving scenarios and road changes.
- Build ground-truth evaluation datasets, measure model precision and recall, and systematically improve detection accuracy.
- Integrate automated labeling pipelines into data storage and simulation testing workflows.
What you need
- Currently pursuing a Master of Science or PhD in a quantitative or technical field such as Computer Science, Robotics, or Machine Learning.
- Demonstrate strong programming skills in Python or C++.
- Bring practical experience with data analysis, SQL, and basic statistics.
Nice to have
- Experience with computer vision, Vision-Language Models (VLMs), or prompt engineering
- Familiarity with 3D geometry, coordinate transforms, or sensor data processing
- Experience working with large-scale datasets or distributed data pipelines
