About this role

Maintaining numerical fidelity and eliminating execution variance in autonomous driving systems requires dedicated software architectures, tooling, and workflows. The Onboard Software Integrity team tackles this challenge by building systems that prevent, identify, and resolve non-determinism across onboard and offboard codebases while preserving development velocity.

Incoming interns directly address software reliability by designing diagnostic infrastructure, tracing execution patterns, and safeguarding the integrity of machine learning models across target hardware. This position suits researchers and engineers pursuing advanced degrees who possess strong foundational programming skills and an interest in autonomous vehicle safety.

What you will do

  • Design and build robust infrastructure and tooling to diagnose software non-determinism across autonomous driving systems.
  • Investigate and resolve complex non-deterministic execution patterns across various Waymo codebases.
  • Partner with industry leaders on projects that deliver measurable impact to autonomous driving technology.
  • Contribute to team initiatives focused on onboard software health, numerical model fidelity, and system reliability.

What you need

  • Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD degree in software engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • Demonstrated strong programming skills utilizing C++ for complex software development.
  • Solid academic or practical foundation in algorithms, data structures, and systems debugging.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid onsite environment based in Mountain View, CA.

Nice to have

  • Experience with statistical data analysis, anomaly detection, or tracing tools
  • Understanding of common sources of software non-determinism such as concurrency, race conditions, or floating-point determinism
  • Experience with graph execution frameworks

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation packages with a housing or relocation bonus if applicable
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage
  • Fun intern events and professional networking opportunities
  • Free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks provided onsite
