About this role
Developing infrastructure for reinforcement learning systems and running experiments to improve autonomous driving models forms the core daily routine of this internship. Operating within the Onboard developer platform team, the incoming engineer builds internal tools and solutions that accelerate model training, quality evaluation, and simulation for fellow engineers. Waymo seeks individuals currently pursuing advanced degrees who want to tackle complex technical challenges in robotics and machine learning while partnering with industry leaders.
What you will do
- Analyze the operational details and underlying problems of the current LPM model.
- Expand existing reinforcement learning infrastructure and execute system experiments.
- Adjust parameters to benchmark performance against historical outcomes.
- Research promising reinforcement learning technologies for application to company challenges.
What you need
- Current enrollment in a Master's or PhD program focused on software engineering, machine learning, or a related technical discipline.
- Strong foundational knowledge of machine learning and reinforcement learning principles.
- Minimum of two years of project experience involving practical coding and demonstrable results.
Nice to have
- Three or more years of experience in machine learning or reinforcement learning with hands-on projects
- Two or more years of experience optimizing system infrastructure including simulation, ML/RL, or backend systems
- Prior exposure to autonomous driving technology or closely related domains
