About this role

Developing the infrastructure for simulation and realism machine learning requires engineers to build and scale systems that process petabytes of feature data and millions of multi-modal examples. This internship places successful candidates within the software engineering teams that create the core decision-making and perception architectures for autonomous vehicles. Daily responsibilities involve implementing new systems to streamline workflows, collaborating with internal users to refine agent flows, and maintaining large-scale data pipelines.

Waymo offers advanced researchers and engineers an environment to partner with industry leaders on projects that directly influence the autonomous driving stack. Ideal candidates bring strong programming fundamentals alongside a background in distributed systems or machine learning lifecycles.

What you will do

  • Contribute directly to ongoing engineering projects that manage millions of multi-modal examples and petabytes of feature data.
  • Implement new software systems designed to improve current development workflows and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with users and internal agents to identify specific use cases and process flows that require enhancement.

What you need

  • Current enrollment in a Master's or PhD degree program focusing on Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated coding proficiency in Python and C++ languages.
  • Practical knowledge of distributed systems architecture.
  • Familiarity with the end-to-end lifecycles of machine learning training and inference.

Nice to have

  • Hands-on experience with distributed storage, feature extraction, and feature representations.
  • Previous experience utilizing deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and Jax.
  • Background knowledge in robotics or autonomous driving technologies.

Benefits

  • Participation in company benefits programs subject to standard eligibility requirements.
