2027 Summer Intern, MS/PhD, Machine Learning Engineer - Simulator Realism Evaluation
About this role
Curious software engineers and researchers who want to work on Level 4 autonomous driving will find a strong fit within this team. The Simulator Realism Evaluation group at Waymo focuses on building the brains of fully autonomous driving technology, specifically developing tools that help the Waymo Driver perceive the world and make safe decisions in complex environments.
During the summer, you will prototype machine learning models, write code for simulation and evaluation systems, and design statistical experiments to test ML discriminators. The team tackles difficult challenges in robotics, perception, and deep learning alongside hardware and systems engineers. This internship exists to integrate top graduate students into core projects while serving as a key pipeline for future talent.
What you will do
- Conduct machine learning modeling experiments and prototyping to build advanced evaluation tools.
- Write code within Waymo's simulator and evaluation systems.
- Design statistical experiments to measure the efficacy of machine learning discriminators.
- Collaborate across organizations to deliver impact to onboard teams as well as downstream safety and simulation technology stakeholders.
What you need
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program, such as a Master's or PhD, in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
- Demonstrate proficiency in software development using C++ or Python.
- Possess a solid foundation in core computer science concepts including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
- Bring a solid foundation in machine learning and statistics models, algorithms, and libraries.
- Understand software systems, covering distributed systems and accelerated computing.
- Maintain an active interest in autonomous driving, simulation, evaluation, and physical AI.
Nice to have
