2027 Summer Intern, BS/MS, Software Engineer, RO Performance team, Release Evaluation (Simulation)
About this role
Scale bottlenecks in simulation evaluation pipelines limit how fast autonomous vehicle performance can be validated. Waymo addresses this challenge by bringing on a software engineering intern to prototype scheduling algorithms that smooth computational loads and run benchmarks measuring system throughput. Working within the RO Performance team focused on Release Evaluation Simulation, the incoming engineer will analyze experiment results, document findings, and help integrate successful strategies into production systems. This internship suits students pursuing a technical degree who possess a solid grounding in data structures, algorithms, and general-purpose programming languages.
What you will do
- Collaborate directly with team members to analyze experiment results and document findings.
- Help integrate the most successful optimization strategies into production workflows.
- Prototype specialized scheduling algorithms designed to smooth out computational load.
- Run benchmarks to measure the speed, throughput, and resource efficiency of related systems.
- Evaluate specific implementations using performance metrics and large datasets.
What you need
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Demonstrate a solid foundation in computer science fundamentals, particularly data structures and algorithms.
- Possess strong software development skills with proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language such as C++, Java, or Python, alongside SQL.
- Show a clear desire to learn and work extensively in C++ during the internship.
- Bring familiarity with or a strong interest in foundational concepts related to distributed systems, data processing pipelines, or operating systems.
- Maintain familiarity with the statistical concepts necessary for interpreting large datasets.
Nice to have
- Strong general coding skills and the ability to write robust software with C++ proficiency
- Experience or coursework related to distributed systems, operating systems, and specifically task scheduling
- Familiarity with data processing pipelines, software profiling, and benchmarking
- Experience working with large datasets and utilizing data analysis tools to evaluate system performance
