The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence

The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Ai2) develops machine learning methodologies and artificial intelligence applications focused on improving physics-based climate models. Through its Climate Modeling team, the organization builds open-source tools designed to generate weather and climate forecasts. This work includes the creation of ACE, an autoregressive emulator coupled with a machine learning ocean model, which is trained to account for changing carbon dioxide concentrations and downscale outputs to kilometer-scale detail.

Ai2 collaborates with physics-based climate modeling centers and other research groups to obtain training and testing data and gather feedback on its progress. The organization employs teams of scientists and software engineers based in Seattle. Its ongoing projects involve developing physics-informed hybrid climate models trained on historical data to produce multidecadal forecasts that account for processes such as clouds, rain, wind, land and sea-ice, and ocean currents.
