Basis is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit applied research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals. The first goal is to understand and build intelligence by establishing the mathematical principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explanation, and constructing software that implements these principles. The second goal is to advance society's ability to solve intractable problems by expanding the scale, complexity, and breadth of problems solved today and accelerating future problem-solving. To achieve these goals, the organization builds a technological foundation inspired by human reasoning alongside a collaborative organization that prioritizes human values.

Basis works directly on high-impact challenge problems and uses findings to identify shared bottlenecks that accelerate progress across multiple efforts. Recurring needs are turned into durable, open-source methods, software, and research through core-tech work via close collaborations with academic and industrial partners. The funding model combines grants, donations, and company contracts to solve important problems while building durable technical foundations.
